Turing, Alan
British mathematician (1912-1954) who succeeded in decrypting the Enigma Cipher, which had not been decrypted until then, thereby securing the success of the Allies in World War II. He allegedly committed suicide with a poisoned apple after being ostracized for his homosexuality and the effects of the hormone treatment he sought.
